The Yellow Kite
Hey everyone! I am still new to writing stories so bear with me. let me know how you likes this one.
Maan lived in a small house on the outskirts of a small village. Everything about Maan's life small, or so he thought. His house, his bed, his height, he even was the younger brother! Well anyways, Maan sat on his bed and looked around listlessly. He was bored, but could not find anything to do.
Against his better judgement, he went across the room to snoop in his brother's cupboard. His brother always had something new and exciting in his cupboard. But he didn't like Maan touching his belongings, which Maan thought was very inconsiderate of his brother.
As soon as he opened the door, a flash of yellow caught his eye. He could not reach it. Maan spent the next few minutes dragging the heavy chair across the room, and hoping Maa would not come to check what the noise was. He, finally, climbed the chair and saw the most beautiful kite he had ever seen. It was almost as big as him, had a shiny red ribbon at it's base and a pair of pretty eyes painted on it.
Maan peeked out his room door and saw the coast was clear, he sprinted out and did not stop running until he reached the small hill behind his house. It was early afternoon, Maan figured he had a few hours to fly the kite and put it back before his brother came home. But it was not Maan's day...
No sooner had he unwind the string and tied it to the kite, than the wind picked up speed and the kite was jerked out of little Maan's hands. Maan tried hard to pull the kite back down but the wind was strong. The kite's string broke and it floated away with the wind, leaving Maan behind.
Maan ran after the kite to pick it up where it fell. But the kite seemed to have a mind of it's own and would absolutely not come down. Maan ran down the hill in the kite's pursuit and straight into the village market. Maan saw the kite dropping down behind a shop, and he made a run for it.
"MAAN!"
Maan cringed at his mother's voice, knowing full well what was coming next.
"Where are you running off to in this afternoon heat?", Maa admonished.
"Nowhere Maa, I was just playing with my friends." Maan said while trying to look for the kite.
"Arey what are you searching for? Look at me when I am talking to you. Running off without telling anyone. You're going to be picked up by a daaku one day, then you will understand." Maa said. "Now come home. Here hold this bag." And Maa thrust a bag in Maan's hand.
"But Maa.... Just 5 more minutes please. I will be back soon." Maan said as he out the bag down and darted away behind the shops.
"Maan! MAAN! What am I going to do with this little hellion!" Maa half yelled half muttered as she picked up the bag.
Maan searched behind the shops, but the kite was nowhere to be found. He saw some boys playing near a shop, he decided to ask them. "Oye! Have you seen a yellow kite fall here somewhere?" Maan asked.
A boy said, "I saw Parv with a yellow kite. He went that way." And pointed towards the temple.
Maan ran all the way to the temple. He saw Parv sitting with the kite.
"Hey! That's my kite." Yelled Maan.
Parv startled and looked up, saw Maan and said, "You are too young to have your own kite. I saw it behind our shop. Finders keepers."
"It is my brother's kite. And I would have found it before you, if you didn't pick it first." Maan said with a pout.
Parv laughed and said, "That is not it works chotey."
"Look, my brother will kill me if he finds I lost his kite. Here I have some smooth stones from the river we went to last month, I will give these to you in exchange for the kite." Maan extended his hand to show a a bunch of smooth stones.
"What am I going to do with these stones? Let me fly the kite for a while then you can take it away." Parv said.
"Okay but be quick. My brother will be back soon." Maan said after thinking for a while.
Parv flew the kite for a few minutes but then came the wind again. Parv laughed as the kite went higher and higher, Maan also jumped up and down seeing the beautiful kite dancing in the wind. Parv began to wind the string and bring the kite down but the kite got stuck in the branches of the tree.
"What did you do? Now how are we going to get the kite down?" Maan cried.
"I don't know. There's your kite. I'm going home." Parv said with a wave and started walking away.
"Hey that's not fair. You put it up there. Bring it back." Maan said.
Parv just shrugged and broke into a run.
Maan was in tears. How was he supposed to get the kite down? It was evening already. Bhaiya must have come home. Maa is also angry. She will be more angry when she finds I took Bhaiya's kite.
Maan wiped his tears and went near the tree. He tried to shake the tree but it would not move. He climbed on the lower branches of the tree and tried to reach the kite. But it was still too far from his hands. He stood up on a branch and tried to stand on his toes. But he misjudged the branches strength, the branch broke and Maan fell on his butt. This made Maan cry more.
He just sat beneath the tree and kept crying. It was evening now. The sky was turning orange, there was a steady breeze around. He could see other kites in the sky far away. Seeing them made him cry more.
"Maan you fool! What are you doing here?"
Bhaiya's voice startled Maan out of his thoughts, and made him cry harder.
Bhaiya came near Maan and saw he was crying and said," Maan, what happened? Are you hurt? Why are you crying?"
Maan told his brother how he stole his kite and lost it immediately. And how he tried to search for it but now it is stuck in the tree.
His brother laughed and said, "Maan, the kite was for you. It was your gift, for your birthday tomorrow. If only you had asked. What a fool..."
"Now come on up, let us see if we can get the kite out." Bhaiya said.
Maan just got up and followed his brother. They saw the kite was stuck and was torn too.
"No use of getting the kite out now Maan, its torn anyways. I will get you a new one tomorrow." Said Bhaiya.
"Will you get me a yellow kite bhiaya?" Maan asked.
"Did you like the yellow kite?" Bhaiya asked.
"Yes." Maan nodded.
"Okay. We will get you another yellow kite."
